Abstract

Thyroid hormone levels wére determined in normal infants, marasmus, and marasmic kwashiorkor. Serum thyroxine is higher under one year of age that at birth or after one year. Free thyroxine is higher at 2-3 months that later. TBG falls slightly but not significantly with age. Elevated TSH of cord serum falls to normal adult levels by 2-3 months. Despite normal TBG, serum thyroxine may be decreased in marasmus and during recovery; free thyroxine may be high to low initially, normal or low during recovery; serum TSH was low or normal at both times. In kwashiorkor, low initial TBG accounted for low thyroxine but free thyroxine was normal or elevated; TSH was normal. During recovery, TBG returned tonormal but thyroxine only partially so, and free thyroxine fell, as did TSH. TBPA did not change significantly with age or nutritional state.
